(Reuters) – Twitter Inc will experiment by allowing companies to showcase up to 50 products for sale in their profiles, the company said Wednesday, as part of efforts to gain a US market share of $ 45 billion for so-called social commerce.

Facebook and Instagram, owned by Meta Platforms Inc, have been leaders in social commerce, allowing retailers to create virtual stores and sell products.

A beta test for Twitter Shops will be available to selected businesses in the United States and will be visible to people using the Twitter app for the iPhone, the company said.

U.S. wireless carrier Verizon, one of the testing partners, unveiled iPhone cases and wireless chargers on Wednesday at its Twitter store.

After viewing the product on Twitter, users are redirected to the seller’s website to place an order.

The experiment extends a previous feature that Twitter began testing last year, allowing brands to showcase up to five products at the top of their Twitter profiles.

The San Francisco-based company is also experimenting with live broadcasts of purchases, allowing people to purchase clothes, accessories and other items while watching live brand videos about the products.
