The 75th Cannes Film Festival will open on Tuesday evening with the premiere of Michelle Khazanavičius’ zombie comedy “Final Cut”. Over the next 12 days, 21 films will compete for the prestigious top award of the Palme d’Or Festival and several high-profile Hollywood titles, including “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Elvis” and “Three Thousand Years of Sorrow” – also kicks off in Kanah.
“Everyone wanted to come to Cannes this year,” said Thierry Fremo, the festival’s artistic director before the opening. “Everyone wanted to meet again.”
This year’s Cannes will officially begin on Tuesday night with the opening ceremony, which precedes the premiere of “Final Cut”, which was renamed from the original name “Z” after Ukrainian protesters noted that the letter Z in some symbolizes support for Russia’s war in Ukraine . .
It is expected that the war in Ukraine will be regularly present in Cannes. The festival banned Russians who have ties to the government. Several films by well-known Ukrainian directors are being released, including Sergei Loznitsa’s documentary “Natural History of Destruction.” Footage shot by Lithuanian director Mantas Kvedaravičius before the murder in Mariupol in April will also be shown by his fiancée Anna Bilobrova.
The jury that will decide this year’s Golden Palm, the biggest prize, will also be presented in Cannes on Tuesday. Along with the president of the jury Vincent Lindon, the French actor, perform: Deepika Padukon, Rebecca Hall, Asgar Farhadi, Trinka, Laj Lee, Numi Rapas, Jeff Nichols and Joachim Trier.
