SAN ANTONIO – The McNay Art Museum’s mission to share the visual arts with the San Antonio community and promote innovation in today’s youth is evident through their new interactive studio, which opened Friday.

The studio’s design aim is to reflect the picturesque gardens that stretch across McNay’s 25-acre landscape in the newly opened space. The hope is that McNay’s oasis-like environment will carry over to the inside of the museum from the outside.

DoSeum Design Studios conceived the project alongside McNay’s educational, curatorial and operational staff.

San Antonio artist Somin Jung Remler collaborated with museum staff to create the artistic elements that make up the imaginative learning space.

Remler was born in Seoul, South Korea, and earned a master’s degree in foreign affairs from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Known for her colorfully vibrant works of landscape art, Remmler brings nature and creative elements into the new studio space for visitors to appreciate and explore.

Remmler’s artistic elements that make up the new studio space answered the question: “What does home mean to you?”

“I created the small village and house in response to the fantastic foliage walls throughout the studio because they remind me of the nature that exists within each of us,” Remler said.

“The miniature houses, stars, moon and origami airplanes symbolize the home as the place where the heart is,” Remler said.

The space is dedicated to nurturing feelings of love, art, and nature through community interaction that drives artistic passions and goals.

“We wanted everyone to see and feel our community-driven mission the moment they walked in the door,” said Richard Est, director and CEO of McNay.

San Antonio is known to be a welcoming, community-oriented place, and the studio deepens the art museum’s commitment to serving the South Texas community through arts and cultural initiatives.
