CHICAGO – Orlando Magic won the NBA Draft Lottery on Tuesday night and became number one in the overall standings for the first time since receiving Dwight Howard in 2004.

This is the fourth time the Magic has won a lottery, winning in 1992 and 1993 by taking Shaquille O’Neill and then swapping rights to Chris Weber for Penny Hardway.

Orlando finished with the worst performance in the Eastern Conference with a score of 22-60 and missed the playoffs for the eighth time in 10 years. But they got a huge win in the lottery where they had a 14% chance of getting the best choice.

Paolo Banchera of Duke, Chet Holmgren of Gonzaga, Jaden Ivey of Purdue and Jabari Smith of Auburn are considered the most likely candidates to be accepted first. The call-up is on June 23 in New York.

The second choice went to Oklahoma City, followed by Houston and Sacramento. The Kings rose from 7th place in the lottery.

Detroit is in fifth place, Indiana, Portland, New Orleans and Washington close the top 10. Other lottery results: New York, Oklahoma City, Charlotte and Cleveland.

In the lottery with 14 ping-pong balls numbered 1 to 14, located in the bunker, the first four elections are determined. The other teams that are not in the playoffs, go in the reverse order to the finish.

Houston, Orlando and Detroit had the best chance of winning the lottery – 14%. All three had young teams that finished at the bottom of the NBA.

Magic is looking to build on the draft after veterans Nikola Vucevic and Aaron Gordon were exchanged in March 2021 for the first round of the draft in 2023 and 2025. But they were missing the two young players they are trying to build last season with Jonathan Isaac and Markel Fultz recovering from knee injuries.

New Orleans could become one of the biggest winners as the only playoff team with a lottery choice. The Pelicans got it in trade in 2019, as a result of which Anthony Davis went to the Lakers.

Los Angeles struggled with a 33-49 record, the eighth worst in the NBA, which gave the Pelicans a chance to make money. They had to choose to get into the top 10 to keep it, and there was a 99.6% chance of that.

They can now add a choice to the lottery along with Brandon Ingram at All-Star.

Banchero, Holmgren and Smith decided to become professionals after one student season, while Ivy spent two years at Purdue.

Banchero, weighing 6 feet 10 and weighing 250 pounds, was considered a likely player before he arrived at Duke from Seattle as part of a talented recruited class. He justified this by helping the Blue Devils reach the record-breaking 13th Final Four of coach Mike Krzyzewski, who is now retired, before losing to North Carolina’s main rival.

Due to his strength and perimeter skills Banchera averaged 17.2 points and 7.8 rebounds. He scored 20 or more 15 times, not reaching double-digit numbers only twice in 39 games.

Holmgren, 7 feet with the ability to pass and handle the ball as a guard, was one of Hansaga’s most touted recruits. He was a rookie of the year at the West Coast Conference, the best player of the year in defense and first team selection at all conferences. He averaged 14.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.6 blocks per game, and was the third AP All-American team.

Smith also justified his accounts as one of the best recruits for Auburn. The Tigers took first place in the rankings and spent three weeks in first place. 6-10, 220-pound from Fayetteville, Georgia, was the second team, All-American and SEC freshman of the year. He topped Auburn by scoring an average of 16.9 points and 7.4 rebounds. Smith was also the Tigers ’top 3-point scorer, making 79 attempts out of 188 (43%).

The rest of the first round is as follows: Charlotte at number 15, followed by Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, Minnesota, San Antonio, Toronto, Denver, Memphis, Houston (from Brooklyn to James Harden), Milwaukee, San Antonio, Dallas, Miami, Golden State, Memphis and Oklahoma City.
