CANBERRA – Australian singer and songwriter Nick Cave has confirmed the death of his son Jer Laisenby at the age of 31.
“It is with great sadness that I can confirm that my son Jethro has passed away,” rock band frontman Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds said on Tuesday.
“We would be grateful for the privacy of the family at this time,” Cave added.
Fashion model, rapper, actor and photographer Lazenby was the son of Cave from model Bo Lazenby, who was born in Melbourne in 1991.
He was the eldest of Cave’s four children, all boys.
One of Cave’s twin sons with his current wife Susie Cave died in an accidental fall from a cliff near Brighton, England, in 2015. Arthur Cave took the psychedelic drug LSD before falling.
Jetro Lazenby, who used the name Jetro Cave to help his modeling career, died in Melbourne after being released from prison last week. Details of his death are not disclosed.
He was in custody shortly after he attacked his mother during a quarrel at her home in Melbourne on March 7 and left her bruised and bleeding, the Melbourne Herald Sun reported.
He pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful assault and violation of court decisions. On Thursday, he was released from a pre-trial detention center on strict conditions, the newspaper reports.
The court ordered him to undergo drug treatment and avoid contact with his mother for two years. He was due to return to court in June to be convicted of assault and shoplifting.
He was jailed in 2018 for assaulting a girlfriend.
Last month, his lawyer told the magistrate that his client had a long-standing diagnosis of schizophrenia.
In 2012, Lazenby told the London newspaper Evening Standard that he was 7 or 8 years old when he first met his famous father. Cave told the British newspaper The Guardian in 2008 that he would always regret the lack of contact with his son in early childhood.
“But now I have a wonderful relationship with him,” Cave said. “It was hard at the time, but it turned out great.”
In Lazenby remained a younger half-brother Luke Cave, who was also born in 1991. The musician’s second child, just a few days younger than the first, was born in Brazil to his then-wife Vivian Carneiro, a Brazilian fashion designer and journalist.
Earl Cave’s half-brother, Arthur’s twin, also remained in Lazenby. The twins were born in 2000.
