The wild Carolina Panthers-Atlanta Falcons finish shows why bettors love (or at least temporarily hate) the NFL.

Welcome to the world of silly wins and bad beats in sports betting.

Each week we’ll be rounding up the bets that have seen some people make money and others tear up their tickets in frustration. To paraphrase the famous broadcaster Al Michaels, “these plays matter to some.”

Let’s dive into this week’s madness!

Atlanta is coming off a crazy overtime win against the Panthers.

The Atlanta Falcons defeated the Carolina Panthers in overtime.

Sokolov-Panther bets are on the edge

After the Falcons’ 37-34 overtime win over the Panthers, there’s praise/blame all around. In the last minute of the game, all the bettors were on the edge of their seats:

– Atlanta’s Youngho Koo made a 34-yard field goal with 36 seconds left to extend the Falcons’ lead to 34-28.

– With 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Panthers quarterback PJ Walker rolled left and threw the ball 70 yards downfield.

– Two Falcons defenders let DJ Moore get behind them for a rush in the end zone with 12 seconds left. A connection between the PJs and the DJs tied the game at 34 points with an extra point.

– But Moore was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for taking off his helmet while celebrating, pushing the extra point 15 yards.

– Kicker Eddie Pineiro was wide left on a 50-yard (normally 35-yard) extra point attempt, forcing overtime.

– In OT, victory seemed inevitable when Carolina drove to Atlanta’s 14-yard line after C.J. Henderson’s interception at the Falcons 20 for 54 yards. For those keeping score at home, the Panthers have players named CJ, DJ and PJ.

– Pineiro was wide left (again) on a 32-yard field goal attempt (which was three yards shorter than a normal extra point attempt) with 5:54 left in OT.

– After Pineiro fumbled, Falcons QB Marcus Mariota ran 30 yards on third-and-1 to the Carolina 24.

– Ku kicked a 41-yard field goal with 1:55 left in regulation to win it for the Falcons.

How has all this affected the bettors? Some betting results after the wild finish:

– Bettors on the Panthers to win +4.5 points and cash in after not covering in seconds in regulation.

– Falcons moneyline bettors (-213, bet $10 to win $14.69) cashed.

– Panthers moneyline bettors (+160, bet $10 to win $26) were given an additional point/unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to not cash.

– Over 41.5 bettors were in the money after a 37-point fourth quarter and overtime.

Two sacks sink the Cardinals

Arizona’s potential rally to force overtime ended after Kyler Murray was sacked on the final two plays as the Minnesota Vikings (-4) beat the Cardinals 34-26.

The Vikings extended their lead to eight points on a Kirk Cousins touchdown pass with 8:36 left, but the extra point attempt hit the post, keeping it a one-point game.

Minnesota held on as Arizona’s final three drives ended in an interception, a down and a clock running out with the Cardinals at the Vikings’ 44-yard line.

With 48 seconds left, Murray completed a deep pass to DeAndre Hopkins for 24 yards to the Minnesota 37.

Murray hit the ball to stop the clock, but was sacked on the next two plays as time expired.

The Minnesota Vikings defense proved to be the heroes in a 34-26 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

The yardage makes the difference

A player bet on Thursday night’s game between the Ravens and the Buccaneers was $1 with 10 easy for +7000 ($71 total).

The bettor made the first nine punts, but is a half-yard short on the 10th — Tom Brady has passed for less than 324.5 yards.

Brady finished 26-for-44 passing for 325 yards. His final pass was an 8-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal with 49 seconds left.

The bettor would be paid with the outstanding score.

Taking a knee is expensive

In the same game, after Brady’s TD pass, the Ravens recovered an onside kick at the Tampa Bay 46 with 48 seconds to play.

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson took a knee twice, each for a 1-yard loss, to run out the clock.

Jackson finished with 43 yards on nine carries.

Jackson’s over/under (O/U) throw was 45 yards, spoiling the game for the four-legged punters.

Big game for TD scorers

Alvin Kamara of the Saints, AJ Brown of the Eagles, D’Onta Foreman of the Panthers and Tony Pollard of the Cowboys all scored three touchdowns on Sunday.

Penn State fans bemoan the pick six

Penn State (+16) led Ohio State 21-16 with less than 10 minutes left Saturday. Things quickly picked up for the Nittany Lions, but Penn State fans who took away the points still had a chance.

The Buckeyes outscored the Nittany Lions 28-3, including 14 points in 28 seconds to close out the game.

Six picks by the Ohio State quarterback (defensive endo!) doomed Penn State fans.

The Nittany Lions covered 37-24 when quarterback JT Tuimoloau returned an interception 14 yards to make it 44-24 with 2:42 left, which soon had Nittany Lions fans tearing up their tickets.

The extra point is crucial

Florida State comfortably lost to Georgia Tech (+24) by 31 points after scoring a touchdown with 1:09 left.

The Yellow Jackets took over at their own 25-yard line, completed six passes in eight attempts to get down the field and scored a touchdown on a late game run.

Exactly when is being discussed.

Screenshots showed there was one second left, but the officials declared the game over. Since this would not affect the result, no extra point was scored.

The Yellow Jackets lost by 25 points, 41-16. Ai.

An interception turns into a fumble, turns into a…

Unranked Louisville was comfortably ahead of No. 10 Wake Forest 48-14 in less than six minutes. O/U was 65.5 points.

The Demon Deacons drove to the Cardinals’ 14-yard line with 1:45 left.

Good news for Under bettors: Louisville intercepted a pass on third down.

The bad news: the Cardinals fumbled after the pick and the Demon Deacons recovered.

Worse news: Wake Forest scored a TD with 14 seconds left to make the final score 48-21, much to the chagrin of Under bettors.

O/U is good for some

No. 7 TCU led West Virginia 34-31 and took over at midfield on a punt with 2:45 left. O/U was 65.5 points.

The Horned Frogs continued to move the ball as the clock ticked down. TCU called a timeout with 26 seconds left and faced a fourth-and-1 from the West Virginia 26.

The Horned Frogs completed a TD pass on the next play to make it 41-31 and reach Over. That was no consolation to the Under bettors.

Stay tuned for more wildness!
