The new edition of the Grand Touring Performance with 1050 horsepower becomes the most powerful version of the electric sedan Air from Lucid.

Electric car maker Lucid is debuting a new version of its popular and powerful luxury Air sedan.

The Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance, announced Tuesday, will come with 1,050 horsepower and a starting price of $ 179,000. The Air sedan has impressed critics in many ways since its launch last fall, thanks in part to the stunning performance of the 1111-horsepower Dream Edition.

But this model was not easy to obtain. Lucid limited production of the Dream Edition to just 520 cars, which were discussed for several months before Lucid began shipping the first Airs from its Arizona plant in October.

Lucid said Tuesday that the Grand Touring Performance – with specifications that are almost in line with the Dream Edition and a starting price that is only $ 10,000 higher – will not be so limited in production.

Although Air has made a big impression on the elite EV market, Lucid is still in the early stages of production. The company said in late February that it had built about 400 cars since production began in September and that it had about 25,000 bookings for Air.

It now expects to supply 12,000 to 14,000 vehicles in 2022, compared with a previous forecast of 20,000, as disruptions in global supply chains have slowed the rise in Air production.

Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson said the company had moved on to developing a higher performance model after realizing that there was still significant demand for the Air line with a four-digit horsepower rating.

Lucid was able to quickly develop a new model thanks to its “vertical integration,” Rollinson said. Lucid designs and manufactures its own electric motors and batteries on its own, rather than relying on components from third-party suppliers, as most major automakers do.

The performance adjustments to the Grand Touring Performance are the result of supply chain problems that have affected almost all automakers around the world. But the characteristics of the new Air are still impressive:

  • Acceleration from zero to 60 mph is just 2.6 seconds, compared to the stated 2.5 seconds for the high-performance version of the Dream Edition.
  • According to the EPA, the range is 446 miles versus 471 miles for the high-performance Dream Edition.
  • Lucid’s advanced driver assistance system, DreamDrive Pro, is standard with most of the equipment needed for fully autonomous control, including the leader sensor.
  • The Lucid 900-volt super-fast charging system, which allows the user to add up to 300 miles of range in just 21 minutes using a fast 350-kilowatt DC charger, is also standard.

The new Air outperforms Tesla’s highest performance in most respects, but not in overclocking. The Tesla Model S Plaid was launched last year with 1,020 horsepower, a range of 396 miles, an EPA estimate, a starting price of just over $ 130,000 – and a stated acceleration from zero to 60 in 1.99 seconds.

Grand Touring Performance is a more productive version of the previously announced Lucid Air Grand Touring, which requires 819 horsepower. Lucid said Tuesday that the model has begun to ship.

Deliveries to the US of the new Grand Touring Performance model will begin in June.
