JetBlue Airways Corp. said it plans to launch a hostile attempt to take over the discounted carrier Spirit Airlines Inc. after Spirit rejected JetBlue’s $ 3.6 billion offer in favor of an existing deal with Frontier Airlines.

JetBlue is addressing Spirit shareholders directly, launching a tender for their shares, hoping to put pressure on Spirit’s management to re-engage in negotiations, JetBlue said Monday. Meanwhile, JetBlue said it was urging Spirit shareholders to vote against the June 10 planned merger of Spirit with Frontier Group Holdings Inc. to send a message to the Spirit board.
