Is he brave? Wait to see the whites of his eyes, US scientists insist, when they reveal little-known indicators that may dictate male masculinity

How do we value masculinity and femininity? One way is to look at the whites of people’s eyes, scientists have found.

The white color called “sclera” is more yellow and red in men but more blue and green in women and we unknowingly notice the difference.

“People use the color of the sclera as a signal to make judgments about persons related to sex. This is not something that people are consciously aware of, ”said study leader Professor Richard Russell of Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania in the United States.

The white color called “sclera” is more yellow and red in men but more blue and green in women and we subconsciously notice a difference

Traditional indicators, such as soft skin and full lips in women or a cut jaw and a strong nose in men, also play a role.

Thus, in the first experiment of this kind, the team created photo pairs of identical faces without strong male or female traits.

Changing the color of the sclera, they found that people are much more likely to evaluate red-yellow shades as masculine, and blue-green – as feminine.

But in the elderly, this effect has disappeared, according to a study published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior.

Professor Russell believes this is because a smaller part of the sclera is visible when our aging eyes are lowered.
