Eight people were taken to hospital by plane, and dozens more were taken by ambulance over the weekend to Crystal Beach.
Bolivar Peninsula, Texas – The Galveston County Sheriff’s Deputy was among eight people taken to hospital this weekend. Another 30 people were delivered by ambulance.
The annual Go Topless Jeep Weekend was held on Saturday at Crystal Beach on the Bolivar Peninsula. The event tends to lead to large and noisy crowds.
The MP reportedly reacted to an accident around 1:30 a.m. near Highway 87 and Holiday Drive when he was hit by a suspected drunk driver in another car. The deputy was identified as a sergeant. John Ham. He reportedly received two leg fractures, an arm and head injury. As of Sunday afternoon Ham was still in surgery. A suspect has been detained in the accident case.
More than 100 people were arrested on the peninsula last weekend, authorities said. Deputies said they had responded to numerous attacks, fights and DWI on the peninsula over the weekend.
“I’m not surprised. One guy told me he saw a guy fight right in front of him and he was bleeding on the ground,” said beach visitor Courtney Thompson.
The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office said the crowd had grown significantly at this year’s event, attracting jeep enthusiasts from all over. According to County Manager Doug Saunders, excessive calls for service forced the department to seek help from outside agencies. While the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office was planning an informal event a few months in advance, we had to ask for even more help.
“Today we are seeing an increase in the number of calls to the ambulance and fire service,” Saunders said. “We had limited communication due to the number of people on the peninsula.”
Other agencies included North Montgomery County, the Cy-Fair Fire Response Service and Beaumont. Saunders said the incidents they responded to ranged from minor emergencies to serious injuries.
When hundreds of jeeps lined up to board the Galveston ferry on Sunday morning, those who were stuck said, “It’s just bad that people have to go out and act stupid and leave garbage … that’s not the point. “
There were no details or updates regarding the 38 people hospitalized so far.
