Fox News senior strategic analyst General Jack Keane (retired) called on the United States to end the practice of “strategic ambiguity” with China and move towards clear policies. In the American Newsroom on Monday, Keen said President Xi Jinping had violated the status quo set out in the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, which he said should push the United States to defend Taiwan.

JACK KEEN (IN EXHIBITION): President Xi, when he came to power with his public statements, made this statement, paraphrased by me, that the situation in Taiwan will be resolved peacefully or by force, and he intends to do so while in power. He is threatening war with Taiwan, which violates the status quo.

And then he continued it with intimidation and coercion, repeated military invasions, which we witnessed, complete–large-scale rehearsals of what the air strike will look like. This violates the status quo. It is time for the United States to move away from the strategic ambiguity broken by President Xi and move to a policy that is clear: what the world understands, and President Xi understands that we will essentially defend Taiwan, which is exactly what the president says.
