TOKYO-President Biden said the U.S. would respond militarily to protect Taiwan if China tried to seize it by force, causing uncertainty as to whether the U.S. was moving away from its long-standing policy of strategic ambiguity, and sparking clarification from the White House.
Mr Biden’s comments were met with anger from Beijing and praise from Taipei. They were also part of the pattern: in August and October last year, the president answered questions about Taiwan, proposing a break from U.S. policy toward the democratically self-governing island, only to have aides jump in and say nothing had changed.
