SAN ANTONIO – An off-duty officer and his son were shot and killed while driving home Saturday in what police say was a traffic incident.

At 9:13 p.m., SAPD officers responded to a shooting in the main lanes of NW Loop 1604 at New Guilbeau Road.

Police say the 47-year-old off-duty SAPD officer and his son were driving home when a car rear-ended them.

As they drove past, someone in another vehicle fired multiple shots at the off-duty officer before driving away.

An 18-year veteran SAPD officer was wounded during the shooting but did not attempt to return fire, SAPD said.

SAPD said the officer’s 16-year-old son was not injured in the incident and called police after the shooting.

The officer was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Police said they had very little information about the suspect vehicle, but found shell casings on the highway after closing the roadway to investigate.

This is an ongoing investigation.
